Vienna Named World’s Most Liveable City for Third Consecutive Year
According to the Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) latest annual Global Liveability Index, Vienna has secured its position as the world’s most liveable city for the third year in a row. The index evaluates 173 cities across five key categories: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure.
Vienna received perfect scores of 100 in stability, healthcare, education, and infrastructure. However, its culture and environment score was 93.5 due to the absence of major sporting events. The EIU’s report highlights the city’s consistent excellence in providing a high quality of life.
Other notable cities in the top 10 include Copenhagen, Zurich, Geneva, Melbourne, Calgary, Sydney, Vancouver, Osaka, and Auckland. Western Europe continues to dominate the rankings, but it has experienced a decline in liveability scores due to stability issues.
In the Asia-Pacific region, Melbourne, Sydney, Osaka, and Auckland also feature in the top 10. However, Australia’s overall infrastructure scores have been downgraded due to an ongoing housing crisis affecting rental availability.

The Middle East and North Africa present a mixed picture. While Tel Aviv dropped significantly in the rankings due to conflict, cities in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries have seen gains in education and healthcare. Notably, Algiers, Tripoli, and Damascus remain among the least liveable cities in the region.
In Canada, Toronto’s infrastructure scores declined, causing it to fall out of the top 10. Calgary and Vancouver are the only North American cities in the top tier, while major US cities like Los Angeles and New York rank lower. Despite challenges, all 25 North American cities in the index maintain a high level of liveability.
